Perhaps Deer Isle isn't an island in the strictest sense of the word, connected as it is to the mainland by the eponymous Deer Isle bridge; but it wasn't always that way and once this island too had to wait on the ferryman to take them across Eggemoggin Reach for supplies and emergencies. It shares the same frontiersman attitudes as many of the islands of Penobscot Bay and has endured its share of boom and bust. Today life in Stonington benefits from the lobsters that support many of the local fishermen. Anneli and I went down to visit with some of these men and women, where they gather to sing and tell stories at Stevie's shop, in celebration of The Church of the Morning After.
