Land Fall on Monhegan

Land Fall on Monhegan

_DSC1677.jpg

In May they are
the first to come
In trees and on rooftops
the heady birds sway
precarious and
exhausted.

First landfall found
they are delirious
and stumble
through the streets
like old men drunk after
closing time.

Fresh sheets whip on the line
like wings struggling for flight,
dancing, flapping.
Forsythia spills over
garden fences, everywhere
vibrant and generous,
waving its sunny greeting -

Spring has come.
Spring has come.

Returning on the ferry now
chugging groggily
across the bay,
I rest my head upon my hand
and gaze
through windows steamed
with salty promise.
